My music career began at 7 years old when I became aware I was old enough to join my elementary school band. Playing drums was the first choice because I was inspired by the jazz drummer at my sister’s middle school. My parents were certainly a driving force as my Dad was not musically talented and always wanted to play, but never had the opportunity as he was parents couldn’t afford it. My mom played French horn when she was younger, sister played guitar, piano and avidly sung in school choir. Nonetheless there was a good supportive foundation at home and was blessed with the opportunity to learn music.
When I was nine I received my first drum set and convinced my band teacher to allow me to use it in band. I can say that’s where it really progressed. I enjoyed the limelight of playing the drums and continued as a percussionist through high school in marching unit, orchestra, jazz band and so forth.
I believe the musical turning point for me was years later at a high school performance of Godspell. During intermission I began light conversation with the guitar player, Tom Hirschman. I informed him I played drums and was inspired by his guitar playing. This guy was simply an amazing person, and though he had technical prowess, what struck me most was his humility. This is what I believe to be true “star” quality. Amazingly enough, guitar was his least proficient instrument as he played trumpet, bass, guitar, piano, etc…. Over the years I bugged this guy to death, calling him to jam out, as I really wanted to emulate his ability to play many instruments. His playing inspired me to want to get a guitar, as well as play many other instruments.
Through the years I took many interests in music as I knew that it would remain an important aspect of my life. After graduating from University of Maryland I formed Sound Force Studios, started a personal training company, and began teaching bass, drums and guitar. I formed Sound Force Consulting some years back and am implementing curriculums using music in Baltimore and D.C. schools. I believe that music can inspire kids to learn, and in the end can reduce many socio-economic problems. Though I’ve enjoyed performing with and recording successful artists, I find teaching the most gratifying; knowing my musical knowledge, at any capacity, has made an impact on someone’s life.
Nonetheless, I enjoy keeping busy, and working for myself is quite motivating. Above all, I enjoy sharing my knowledge helping people accomplish goals.
Over the year some of my most inspiring musical artists include Jeff Beck, Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, U2, Van Halen, The Roots, and Earth, Wind and Fire. I really love music as a whole and there is not one genre I dislike.
I take pride in knowing Shawn Reeder was one of my first guitar students, as well as one of the most unique people I’ve ever met. I embrace the opportunity to work with him and his photography is quite simply, breathtaking. Shawn’s website motivates me to create.
